![]() It may be the most exciting thing to happen to British rock Britpop's heyday, the source of 2004's best single - the omnipresent "Take Me Out" - and an eponymous debut album that shifted a faintly staggering 200,00 copies in one month, and the reason the Glasgow quartet have won the coveted title of GQ's Band Of The year. Franz Ferdinind's music may be many things. "This is going to be so awesome!" gushes one magazine rep.Īs it turns out, the experience is awesome only in the way that a sinus wash is awesome. They are to perform a mid-morning acoustic set for the staff of a US rock magazine. It's as if it starts with a cool funky riff - feels just right at that tempo - but once it starts to groove they feel they need to push it a little the final 112 is then the comfortable tempo they can carry on with - it doesn't need to go faster than that.Washington Times improbably compared them to the Bay City Rollers), Franz Ferdinand's US record company has devised an entirely new form of humiliation, presumably concealed within the small print of their recently signed contract, rumoured to be worth more than £800,000. It begins at 94, is up to 106 after 3 minutes or so, and then 111-112 at around the 7-8 minute mark - which is where it then stays pretty solid for the remaining 8 minutes. It's common in live performances - even sometimes in one-take studio ones (pre-click age) - for tempos to steadily increase, but that's usually the result of nerves, or just starting the tune at a too-slow tempo to begin with.īut one that's always intrigued me - because it's such a careful recording - is Herbie Hancock's ( ), which gradually increases in tempo throughout - at least through the first half. ![]() ![]() Dexy's acceleration managed to create an irresistible excitement (among their fans anyway), but Franz Ferdinand were always hopelessly uncool (IMHO). Where they're really obvious and planned (as in ( ) and ( )), I just think they sound cheesy. Personally I don't like tempo changes unless they're just subtle organic fluctuations. It actually sounds pretty bad on the studio version but they work it in so well with the groove on the live track. ![]() There’s a part of the song where a sample of a saxophone is played as a kind of sax solo, and I don’t know if it’s just because it was recorded that way of because the tempo doesn’t quite match up but it fluctuates in and out of time, constantly speeding up and slowing down in short repeating phrases, and it might sound kind of strange but I just absolutely love the pure chaotic nature of that sax, the way it rushes and then seems to compensate by slowing down then over-rushes again and so on. His fingers just glide over the piano and it feels urgent and energising.Ī different song is the live version of ‘Smilin’ Days, Summer Holiday’ from Fishmans last live album. Ryo Fukui has a great track on his first jazz album called ‘Early Summer’ where it launches into double time about 3 minutes in and man it just zips along like a train, it’s great. I’ve found that I really love the kind of tense urgent rushing melodies when played quickly, something about not being a robot on the beat makes the song feel so much more human and enjoyable to me. ![]() We show some sample results for all 4 tools, doing 9Gbps UDP testing between 2 fast servers on a 10Gbps network.įor all tools, use the "-w2m" to increase the window size to reduce packet loss. ![]() I attached it to the lower back piece by flipping the pocket piece upside down and sewing along the bottom, right sides together, then flipping it right side up and topstitching along the bottom for security. I zigzagged elastic across the top edge of the pocket piece, turned it down and twin needled (all my jersey pockets are elasticized across the top). I sort of drafted a pocket piece off an existing jersey, but it was really just a very slight trapezoid shape that was about 6 inches narrower than the back piece. Back pockets are an absolute necessity for me, because I need a place to put my phone and any food I might need for the ride. The main way I jerseyed it up, though, was to add pockets to the back. I like a little collar on my jerseys, but this is a little too tall. Oops.) The only other adjustment I’d consider making to the pattern if I attempt bike clothes again would be to try to figure out how to reduce the amount of fabric at the back neckline. I like my jerseys long, but not that long. (I also managed to sew a dreadful meandering hem. This is a pretty long top, though, so I ended up actually taking off an inch all around before hemming, still preserving the curved back edge. The only change I made was lengthening it in the center back about an inch to create the curved back hem all my favorite jerseys have. So I didn’t really make any mods to the basic pattern. But I digress) that works well for a jersey, and it has a somewhat looser fit through the torso, something that you sometimes want in a jersey, actually (or at least one that’s made from insulating waffle polyester). That’s totally my next hack of this pattern. If the bodice were gathered a little into a midriff band I think I would like it better. It has a sporty look about it to start with (this bothered me on the shirt version, and I think I’ve figured out what makes it that way – no bust gathers. I have like three.)īut as for the pattern itself? I do think I was right that it’s a good candidate for a bike jersey. They don’t slip down like armwarmers and they California-winterize a sleeveless jersey perfectly. But I guess that means it will make a good winter jersey with one of my boleros! (Seriously, these bike boleros are maybe the best bike clothes invention ever. In my test ride with the jersey, the word that sprung to mind was “cozy”, which, again, is not my ideal workout shirt descriptor. It also pulls off that great double trick of cheap knits in that it manages to feel thick and at the same time still cling and show every lump and bump. This is Poly with a capital P fabric, and the waffle weave that’s supposed to be cooling and wicking (I assume) in fact just makes the fabric thicker and poufier, not exactly traits you want in close-fitting athletic wear. It’s just a little late.Īnd the verdict? Well, what I learned here was that the reason I haven’t made a previous foray into self-stitched bike-wear is a good one: the fabrics kinda suck. But, better late than never, right? It’s still old stash, and it’s certainly a vibrant color. But I was finally spurred into action (very leisurely action) by Cation Design’s Vibrant Color Stashbusting Challenge last month. And was just getting warm enough for sleeveless bike jerseys! And then… April happened. I even made up the regular shirt version of the pattern in the meantime. And then I did nothing about it for a long time. I had no pattern ideas until I stumbled across Jalie 2682 – I thought the zipper version would make a perfect bike jersey. When the Slapdash Sewist pointed out this waffley athletic fabric on FFC back in 2011 (egad!), I immediately ordered a yard with a bike jersey in mind. Not just in that I cut it out a full month ago, made it two weeks ago and am just blogging it now, but in that I bought this pattern and fabric literally years ago with this exact project in mind, and it took me until now(ish) to get around to it. This project has been a long time coming. Old and bright and late – Jalie 2682 as bike jersey The easiest way to express what Anomaly does is with the phrase “tower defense in reverse,” which sorta sounds cheesy, but it’s pretty good approximation. It nails its strategy component by providing unique constructs, it nails its controls, and it nails its look, which is really is a treat on touch devices. Despite its over-saturated genre and its dull name, Anomaly: Warzone Earth has something new to share and its fresh conceits are executed in some of the most graceful, simple, and visually striking ways I’ve seen in a long time. This involves re-pathing them to avoid threats, repairing them as they become damaged and ordering new units onto the field if they're lost.11 Bit Studios decision to make a tower defense game set in a bombed-out, alien-infested world otherwise full of sand, bullets, and bombs doesn’t seem like an inspired design direction for a downloadable game from a new studio, but it totally is. Radioactive debris is raining onto the roads, so it's up to you to act as human GPS and field-mechanic to your forces as they make their way into the city. The tutorial mission inserts you on the outskirts of your first anomaly-shrouded city. The commander can dart around and collect these as powerups en-route. He has no offensive capabilities, but grants limited support functions such as area-effect heals for your units, smoke-grenades to fox enemy targeting, and the deployment of decoy vehicles. His role is to provide tactical support to your armoured column as it ploughs inexorably toward the key alien target at the heart of each anomaly. This is thanks in no small part to the unit you have full movement control over: the commander. Your vehicles may move at a plodding pace but the decision-making and the action is intense nonetheless. Tower Defence AI in general could learn a thing or two from you. ![]() Intelligent pathing is the key to success. It's essentially a series of waypoints you set on the way to the mission's key target. By flicking to the command screen you're able to path them around the grid-like cityscapes, choosing which direction they turn at each junction. ![]() Some offer area-effect shielding to the units in front and behind them. Some are lightly armed but heavily armoured designed to soak up fire so your more lightly shielded big-gunners can go to work. Your armoured column consists of up to six units and there are six types to deploy. It's your job to find out, with your hand-picked troupe of combat vehicles. What's going on inside those opaque bubbles? Some kind of alien disco? One can only hope. Go us! Those smithereens, however, have rained down on earth's cities, where they've set up domes of crackling energy: the game's eponymous Anomalies. On a similar scale to Defence Grid, it's a more complex piece of development than standard TD fare, with crisp, pleasing visuals and some interesting tactical challenges all of its own.Ĭertain enemy turrets trigger global visual effects when they fire to emphasise their sheer naughtiness.Ī colossal alien mothership has been spotted heading for earth, but just as it reaches the atmosphere, we blast it to smithereens. Serious buffs may have come across the likes of Anti-TD in the past, which embraces similar concepts, but with nowhere near the level of scope and substance of Anomaly. On the bus, while the bath's running, even in the bath, they scratch my itch.Īnomaly: Warzone Earth, from ex CD-Projekt staffers 11 bit, brings a zesty little tweak to the genre: it places you in charge of mobile forces and leaves tower-construction to the AI. Seeing as it's been so many years since we've seen many of these characters, here's a handy guide to those who return in No Time to Die, so you can be all “Ahhhh, them!” when they appear onscreen. Craig's run has included some more heavily serialised plotlines and character arcs than the franchise has previously done (even though they're many of the same characters from throughout the franchise), so it's good to have a rough handle on Bond's history with some of those faces.
